Crumbles are such an autumn staple and so easily made that little bit more nutritious. Instead of a plain flour I blend some oats and medjool dates into a sweet oat flour, and add some chia seeds in for a bit of omega-3 and some antioxidants. I also use a mix of stewed apples and mixed berries – sweetened with cinnamon and honey.

For the Filling
- 6 Apples peeled, cored and diced
- 1/4 cup Apple Juice or Water
- a big handful Blackberries
- a big handful Raspberries
- a big handful Blueberries
- a tsp Ground Cinnamon
- 2 tbsp Honey
For the Crumble
- 2 cups Oats
- 2 Medjool Dates Pitted
- 2 tbsp Coconut Sugar
- a tbsp Chia Seeds
- 4 tbsp Butter or dairy free alternative
For the Filling
Place your apple chunks in a pan with your apple juice (or water) and stew over a low heat – cover with a lid between stirs.
Once softened – about 8-10 minutes, mush the pieces a bit with your spoon and add in your berries, honey and cinnamon. Continue to stir over the low heat for a further 5 minutes.
Sweeten further to suit taste.
For the Crumble
Blend your oats and medjool dates until a flour-like texture.
Add to a bowl with the chia seeds, coconut sugar and butter. Use your finger/thumb tips to combine and turn into a crumb texture. 3-4 minutes.
You can add a little more butter if the mixture seems dry.
You can make the filling and crumble in advance, but keep separate until you’re ready to bake and add the crumble just before it goes into the oven.
For a sweeter crumble, you could add some coconut sugar to the top before it goes into the oven.
For children under the age of 1, switch out the honey for coconut sugar and blend/mash the finished portion.
